3D printing is a means of making objects that is somewhat new. It is the future of creation and innovation. The machine uses filament and lays it down row by row and layer by layer to eventually finish the object. The applications for 3D printing are basically endless. 3D printing is being used to make parts for industrial machines, toys, and inventing.
My first step in creating my 3D printed project is to
figure out what I will make. I decided on making a phone
holder.
figure out what I will make. I decided on making a phone
holder.
Next I started to build it in Inventor. I started by making a solid block .25 inches thick. And then made a support part that holds it up which is also .25 inches thick. This will be the basis of my project.
I then proceeded to add the curved part on the end. This will be used to amplify sound that comes out of the bottom speakers of the phone. It works much like cupping your hand over the bottom and it also directs the sound at the listener. I used a filet to curve the inside of the extended part. This will also help direct the sound out.
Finally i'm ready to print. I saved the makerbot file onto my flash drive and took it down to the 3D printers. I had Mr. Wilhauer put baby blue filament in for me and proceeded to load up my file. It was set to take approximately 5 hours. I waited for the filement to heat up to the required temperature and then pressed print.
The print took 5 hours so I wasnt able to wait around and take pictures as it printed so I just got a few pics at the start. As I watched it start to print I realized something I never knew before. Which is that the 3D prints are actually somewhat hallow. I had always had the misconception that they were completely solid.
This project went really well as far as making the phone holder. It was a slick process using the 3D printer and Inventor. Im proud of what I made and that is can be applicable in day to day life if I dont have a speaker and it is also useful for just holding my phone up to watch netflix or youtube.
